Sue Ann McKinney

Sue Ann McClellan McKinney
April 7, 1940 ~ October 26, 2019
On Saturday, October 26th, Sue McKinney passed away at home at the age of 79. Sue was born April 7, 1940 in Hillsdale, Michigan to Artie I. and Alice McClellan. She graduated from Reading High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Central Michigan University in 1962. She spent most of her working years in child protection services and retired from the Michigan Department of Social Services in 1997. Sue worked for the state in various jobs across southwest Michigan until her retirement which she thoroughly enjoyed! In 1990 Sue met David McKinney and in 1997 they married in a small ceremony. From the beginning they were inseparable and had tons of fun. They shared a passion for antiquing, cards, entering sweepstakes and traveling. Their travels took them all over the world; places like Greece, Italy and India. As well they traveled the US, enjoying side roads and small towns which often found them stopping to enjoy a bit of pinball at local stops. Sue thoroughly enjoyed pinball right up until her death. Locally she was in the pin ball league at One Well Brewery where she held her own. Sue loved to cook for others, especially for holidays. She made the best lasagna and vegetable soup ever! She tried many new recipes to try to accommodate all of her family’s varying dietary needs. The family Christmas Eve celebration was the big food event of the season. Sue spent months preparing food and gifts for all. Sue and Dave’s home became a very festive place that all generations enjoyed. Sue is preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law Marty McKinney. Survivors include her husband Dave and her children, Matt (Rabbit – Debra) McCulloch of Battle Creek and daughter Tammy McCulloch of Pahoa Hawaii, and Lori (Craig) Farrer of Kalamazoo, Travis (Lissa) Dean-McKinney of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Ian (Heather) McKinney of Kalamazoo; her brother Daryl Bruce (Marcia) McClellan of Reading, Michigan; grandchildren Denver (Rachel), Dustin (Mandi), Dallas, Emily, Meredith, Abby, Kate, Lexi, Cale and Flynn and 2 great grandchildren Audrey and Aleah, with one more on the way; and 4 sisters-in-law, 1 brother-in-law; as well as special friends Tom and Nancy Wozniac. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 2:00 – 6:00 pm at Sprout, 503 Military Street in Battle Creek. Sue was an animal lover. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to ASK All Species Kinship, PO Box 4055, Battle Creek, MI 49016. More information can be found on their website: www.allspecieskinship.org.

Fond memories of Sue, the cousin I didn’t get to see very often. She was a gentle soul full of grace who genuinely welcomed everyone, much like her mother, Aunt Alice. Prayers of sympathy to you, may she rest in peace, free of pain. Linda J Tineo
